David Downing nominated to serve as Moderator of the URC South West Synod: The Revd David Downing has been nominated to serve as Moderator of the United Reformed Church (URC) South Western Synod after the Revd Ruth Whitehead was called to local church ministry in Pembrokeshire last year. David has served in pastoral charge of local churches since his ordination in 1999, and currently serves as minister of Maidenhead and Marlow United Reformed Churches, along with Bracknell and Windsor. David started going to church as a teenager at St John’s Hill URC, Sevenoaks, and grew up with FURY (the Fellowship of United Reformed Youth) serving it at local and national levels, including as a member of the National Youth Committee. After a career in banking, he trained at Westminster College, Cambridge, before being ordained and inducted at Rectory Road URC. He also served at Claremont, Little Eaton, Central URC Derby, Chaddesden, as Chaplain at Derby University, Alvaston, Carlton Road, Mackworth & Repton. David said: “It is a privilege to be called to share in the ministry of the South Western Synod. I have gained so much from the life of the URC and this call is very exciting. There is also a real sense that God is in this, which is also deeply humbling.” “During my ministry, I have served on committees at Synod and national levels (from youth work to mission), served as a Street Pastor in Derby, and have recently been a leader in Aid for Ukraine, running from Maidenhead and Marlow which has so far sent over £180,000 of aid since the outbreak of war. “I am looking forward to discovering the area, and I can’t wait to work with the team, not just in the office, but in all of the churches across the Synod.” Speaking on behalf of South Western Synod, Synod Clerk Rachel Leach said: “We are thrilled to welcome David to the South Western Synod to serve as our Moderator. We look forward to working alongside him as he leads us into the future.” URC General Secretary, the Revd Dr John Bradbury, said: “I’m delighted to welcome David’s nomination to serve as Moderator of the South Western Synod. David brings many gifts and graces to the role including an ability to spot opportunities, and to come alongside people in all kinds of situations. His wisdom and experience will be of great benefit to the Synod and to the wider Church”. The Officers of the URC General Assembly will be invited to confirm David’s appointment when they next meet. RP URC Pilgrimage Walk Saturday 20th April 2024
Wells to Glastonbury Syren Stones Redland Park URC Pilgrimage Walk, Saturday 20 April. The Church in Society group in conjunction with the Climate Justice Group are organizing a Pilgrimage Walk, Wells to Glastonbury, to raise money by sponsorship or by donations for our church charities, The Vine Trust and the North Bristol and South Glos. Food Bank. The walk is known as the Syren Stone walk as it has nine large limestone waymarkers with bronze bells inset and a unique motif depicting something about the area. At every mile you are encouraged to strike the bell with a small pebble. Each bell carries a unique note. The walk will start at the first Syren Stone, at the south corner of the moat around the Bishop’s Palace, (also corner of Silver Street). We will then walk the 9 miles to Glastonbury Tor stopping at each Syren Stone that we find. The walk is mostly flat. It passes the ancient Gog and Magog trees near Glastonbury Tor before climbing towards the Tor itself. The final stone is at the bottom of the Tor. From there we will continue into Glastonbury and catch the bus back. The plan is to travel to Wells and from Glastonbury by bus although it’s fine for those who want to, to travel by car and meet in Wells. The 376 bus runs a regular route from Bristol Bus Station to Wells and Glastonbury. Present 376 bus Bristol Bus Station to Wells times are 9.01- 10.14 and 9.28-10.41. (Times may change by April.) Return bus times from Glastonbury are every 30 mins., 35 min. trip to Wells, 1 hour 50 min trip back to Bristol Bus Station. We aim to start the walk at 10.30 from the first Syren Stone and catch a bus back from Glastonbury about 16.30. You will need to bring a packed lunch and water with you. Please contact me by 31st March by email, alison.hooper@live.co.uk , to let me know if you are coming and how you plan to get there, by bus or own transport. I’m also happy to answer any queries. I will firm up meeting arrangements: bus times and where to meet nearer the time once numbers are known. I hope to see many of you on 20 April. Alison Hooper alison.hooper@live.co.uk The next Organ Treat at Redland Park will be on Saturday 13 April with coffee and cake at 10.30am, followed by 45 minutes organ recital by Eric Tyson. Commitment for Life launches urgent appealIn response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Commitment for Life, the global justice programme of the United Reformed Church, is launching an urgent appeal.
The aim is to raise £5,000 to provide vital support and aid through partner agencies Christian Aid, the Culture and Free Thought Association (CFTA), and the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC). Recent reports reveal a grim reality: on 18 March, it was declared Gaza’s two million people are experiencing “severe levels of acute food insecurity”. In a statement, the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations’ High Representative Josep Borrell and Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said: “This is unprecedented. No IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) analysis has ever recorded such levels of food insecurity anywhere in the world.” This is first time an entire population has been classified in this way. In emphasising the dire situation in Gaza, William Bell, Christian Aid’s Head of Middle East Policy and Advocacy, said: “nobody is safe, but still our partners are doing extraordinary work in the most extreme conditions”. Commitment for Life is devastated by the violence, scale of destruction and loss of life in Gaza affecting friends and partners of the URC in the region and is launching its to do what it can to help aid partner agencies on the ground. The Revd Dr Kevin Snyman, Programme Officer – URC Global Justice & Partnerships, said: “The October 7 attacks devastated many communities in Israel, a close-knit society on the whole, and one deeply anxious about the anger and vitriol directed towards it. “But there can be no justification for such widespread, indiscriminate killing. “We are gravely concerned about Israel’s military response, which the International Court of Justice views as ‘plausibly’ genocidal. We are desperately worried for the entire population in the Gaza Strip, and increasingly in the West Bank.” CFTA is working across refugee camps in Rafah is piloting two ways of addressing basic needs using local, existing mechanisms. The first is water distribution for hygiene by working with well owners across Gaza. The second is working with local farmers who are risking their lives to tend their crops, then distributing vegetables to their communities. PARC is providing food for displaced Gaza refugees, who finding themselves in the most desperate of circumstances. “These brave people need our support,” added Kevin. “Please give generously to this appeal.” Please donate to Commitment for Life’s Gaza Appeal. Every contribution makes a difference in helping those affected by the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Your generosity will help provide essential resources and support to those in need during these challenging times. Thank you for your compassion and support. Please come along to the World Day of Prayer on Friday 1 March at Victoria Methodist Church; refreshments from 10.00am and service from 10.30am. This was written some time ago in preparation for this day by the women of Palestine.
Our next Organ Recital by John Davenport will be on Saturday 17 February, coffee and cake from 10.30am, recital from 11.00am for 45 minutes. All welcome. Donations of £5 suggested; children free.
